Milestone with Capitol Corridor’s One-Millionth Passenger
Published on October 23, 2024
On October 23, 2024, Suisun City marked a major milestone as the Suisun-Fairfield train depot welcomed its one-millionth passenger for the year aboard Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor train. This milestone highlights Capitol Corridor’s recovery, surpassing a million passengers since the COVID-19 pandemic. Located at the head of Main Street, just inside the Suisun City border, the station offers convenient access to the historic downtown and waterfront, with a pedestrian bridge linking to Fairfield. The depot is easily accessible from Highway 12 and serves as a critical stop for commuters traveling between the Bay Area and Sacramento.
“The arrival of Capitol Corridor’s one-millionth passenger symbolizes the importance of our station as an essential transportation hub and its ongoing role in connecting our communities and providing a cost-effective alternative to a traditional car commute,” said Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez. “The one-millionth passenger, Ron Grassi, happens to be a commuter from Sacramento who works in Downtown Suisun City and has been commuting for 14 years. We’re proud to be part of a regional transit system that our residents can rely on.”
Since the Capitol Corridor's launch in 1991, it has become a vital transportation alternative for locals and visitors, offering intercity train service with six daily trains between San Jose and Sacramento. The service area covers eight counties and offers connections to local and intercity buses, making the Suisun-Fairfield station a true intermodal resource.
The Suisun-Fairfield station boasts a rich history—initially constructed in 1914, the depot experienced multiple restorations, including major revitalizations in the 1990s and 2016. The depot was also one of two dozen “colonnade-style” stations erected by the Southern Pacific Railroad and is now the only one remaining in Solano County.
“We’re proud of how the historic Suisun-Fairfield train depot offers convenient transportation access while deepening our community’s connection to Suisun City’s heritage,” Suisun City City Manager Bret Prebula said. “Celebrating the Capitol Corridor’s one-millionth passenger at our depot is just the beginning of a longstanding commitment to enhancing sustainable travel in our city.”
Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor service is made possible through partnerships with the State of California, the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), Union Pacific Railroad, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and local communities. The route remains a cost-effective and sustainable travel option in Northern California.
