Suisun City Celebrates Completion of State Route 12 Landscape Improvements Project funded by $2.15 Million Caltrans’ Clean California Grant

Suisun City, Calif. - March 21, 2025

Suisun City, Calif. – The City of Suisun City proudly marked the completion of the State Route 12 Landscape Improvements Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week. This major beautification effort was funded by a $2.15 million grant from Caltrans’ Clean California program. The project enhances the visual appeal, environmental quality and sustainability of key areas along State Route 12, creating a more welcoming corridor for residents and visitors.

“This project is a major step toward making Suisun City an even more beautiful and inviting place,” said Mayor Alma Hernandez. “By transforming key areas along State Route 12, we are improving the look of our environment while reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and long-term infrastructure enhancements. I am also deeply grateful to the dedicated staff who worked tirelessly on the grant that made this project possible.”

The project focused on improvements in three key locations:

• Improved the triangular area at Civic Center Boulevard on-ramp and off-ramp to create a welcoming entrance to Suisun City’s Historic Waterfront District

• Transformed medians between Marina Boulevard and Walters Road with landscaping and irrigation to create green, attractive spaces

• Added landscaping and irrigation in the strips of bare soil located between the highway curb and soundwall along the north side of State Route 12 between Marina Boulevard and Village Drive

The project also included several enhancements to improve the safety, functionality, and aesthetics of the highway corridor:

• Repaired damaged chain-link fence panels along State Route 12

• Replaced chain-link fencing between Marina Boulevard and Sunset Avenue with wood/wire mesh fencing to improve safety and visual appeal

• Installed paved maintenance pullouts in center medians for easier irrigation access

• Painted K-rails at McCoy Creek for improved appearance

• Placed additional gravel rock along the north side of the highway between Village Drive and Sunset Avenue to reduce erosion and enhance the corridor’s overall look

“The completion of this project is a testament to the city’s dedication to enhancing public spaces while ensuring long-term maintenance and sustainability,” said City Manager Bret Prebula. “We appreciate the support of Caltrans, Solano Transportation Authority and our partners in making these improvements a reality.”

On February 21, 2023, the Suisun City Council awarded Marina Landscape, Inc. a construction contract valued at just under $1.5 million for extensive landscaping and irrigation work. The remaining $671,500 was allocated for in-house inspections, construction management and additional improvements, including weed abatement. Substantial completion of the project was finished in May 2024.

As part of the initial contract, Marina Landscape, Inc. will maintain the new landscaping for two years. Additionally, Caltrans approved a contract change order for ongoing weed abatement services, occurring four times per year over the two-year maintenance period.

The completion of the State Route 12 Landscape Improvements Project is a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure, beautifying urban spaces and promoting sustainability.
